Choosing the perfect outfit for a photo session can be a tricky task. You want to look and feel your best while ensuring your clothing complements the overall aesthetic of the photos. One tried and true strategy that I will always recommend is opting for neutral colors. But why exactly should you wear neutral tones to your photo session? Let's chat about neutral colors and how they can elevate your photo session experience.

1. Timeless Elegance

Neutral colors exude a sense of timeless elegance that never goes out of style. Shades such as white, cream, beige, gray, and taupe are classic choices that convey sophistication and refinement. By wearing neutral tones, you can ensure that your photos stand the test of time, remaining relevant and beautiful for years to come.

2. Focus on You

When you wear neutral colors, the focus shifts away from your clothing and towards you—the star of the photoshoot. Neutral tones provide a subtle backdrop that allows your personality, expressions, and emotions to take center stage. Whether you're posing for a family portrait or an engagement session, wearing neutral colors ensures that the attention remains on the people in the photograph, rather than their attire.

3. Versatility and Coordination

Neutral colors are incredibly versatile and easy to coordinate with other wardrobe choices. Whether you're dressing for a solo portrait session or a group photoshoot, neutral tones effortlessly complement a variety of styles, textures, and accessories. Additionally, neutral colors tend to blend harmoniously with different backgrounds and settings, allowing for seamless integration into diverse photographic environments.

4. Neutrals and the Camera

If you take a look at my Instagram, you can see I tend to edit a little on the warmer side while mainly remaining true to color. When clients ask what they should wear to their sessions, I usually say the same thing: neutrals and earth tones. Let's think of beige, tan, maroon, an earthy yellow/neutral mustard, or denim. Black and white will work, too, but I usually find the more you stick to a neutral pallet, the better the images will come out with my editing style. I also usually recommend staying away from crazy or bold patterns and colors.

Additionally, Arizona's desert landscapes are neutral in color and based on the lenses I shoot with (you can read more about this in a previous blog post of mine linked here), you will make the images look like YOU are the main event. As you should be!

If you are a potential client of mine, I'll give you my number and we can chat through all of this via text :)

5. Timeless Aesthetic

Neutral colors possess a timeless aesthetic that transcends fleeting trends and fads. Whether you're aiming for a classic, vintage-inspired look or a modern, minimalist vibe, neutral tones provide a versatile canvas that adapts to any style or theme. From formal portraits to casual lifestyle shots, neutral colors lend an air of sophistication and understated elegance to your photos, ensuring that they remain relevant and visually appealing for years to come.

Conclusion

Choosing the right outfit for your photo session is essential for achieving stunning results, and neutral colors offer a winning combination of elegance, versatility, and timelessness. By opting for shades such as white, cream, beige, or taupe, you can create a cohesive and visually pleasing look that puts the focus squarely on you—the star of the photoshoot.

Whether you're capturing cherished family moments, celebrating a milestone, or commemorating a special occasion, wearing neutral tones ensures that your photos exude sophistication and timeless beauty. So next time you're planning a photo session, consider reaching for those classic neutrals and let your natural beauty take the spotlight!
